About the Contributors

Joan Baxter

Joan Baxter is the Audit Commission’s national lead for Special Educational Needs and Learning Difficulties and Disabilities and its London lead for Children and Young People. An educational psychologist, Joan is an honorary lecturer at UCL, contributing to training in children’s mental health. Previously a JAR inspector, Joan was also a senior manager in a national children’s mental health charity and held the position of Vice Chair of Trustees of Young Minds.

Joan is co-author of the “Belonging” booklet with Norah Frederickson, and the “Introduction” booklet with Norah Frederickson and Sandra Dunsmuir.

Dr Roger Booker

Dr Roger Booker is a Chartered Psychologist and a research tutor at University College London. He is also a visiting lecturer at the Tavistock Clinic and works independently as an organisational consultant and executive coach. His previous posts include Head of Psychology and Assessment at Surrey County Council and Chair of the mental health charity YoungMinds. His current interests include the development of mental health and emotional well being in schools.

Dr R J (Seán) Cameron

Dr R J (Seán) Cameron is founder and Co-Director of the Professional Doctorate in Educational Psychology at University College London. He is also a private consultant in child and educational psychology. In his current work with foster and residential carers, Sean has co-developed the ‘Authentic Warmth’ approach to childcare, which enables carers to provide highly-competent parenting to meet the psychological needs of children and young people in public care and to provide emotional support for their post-trauma stress.

Seán is co-author of the “Resilience” booklet with Eamon McCrory.

Adrian Faupel

is the Professional and Academic Tutor in Educational Psychology at the University of Southampton. He was a previously a school counsellor in secondary schools before becoming an educational psychologist working for local authorities. His major area of research activity is in the field of emotional and behavioural difficulties and he is the author of a number of publications, including "Emotional Literacy: Assessment and Intervention" and "Anger Management: A Practical Guide"".

Adrian is co-author of the “Social Behaviour” booklet with Roger Booker.

Dr Peter Fuggle

Dr Peter Fuggle trained as clinical psychologist and is currently Clinical Director of Islington Child and Adolescent Mental Health Service (CAMHS). He also works at the Anna Freud Centre in London where he is joint Course Director of the UCL children’s CBT Masters course. He has a particular interest in the application of clinical outcomes to child therapy and to developing integrated models of intervention for complex mental health problems.

Peter is co-author of the “Distress” booklet with Sandra Dunsmuir.

Professor Adrian Furnham

Professor Adrian Furnham is Professor of Psychology at University College London and a Chartered Health Psychologist. He has lectured widely abroad and holds scholarships and visiting professorships at many international universities. Adrian has written over 700 scientific papers and 57 books and is on the editorial board of a number of international journals. He is the past elected President of the International Society for the Study of Individual Differences and founder director of Applied Behavioural Research Associates (ABRA).

Adrian is co-author of the “Healthy Living” booklet with Alice Jones.

Dr John Ivens

Dr John Ivens is an educational psychologist and headteacher of the Bethlem & Maudsley Hospital School. He is also a professional adviser to the children's counselling charity, Place2Be. His research interests include developing on-line and individually administered children's well-being measures (happiness and the social experience of school); the effects of being bullied on children's well-being; children's drawings; exploring the effectiveness of applied behaviour analysis in the education of autistic pupils, and the prediction of successful pupil reintegration.

John is author of the “Enjoyment” booklet.

Dr Alice Jones

Dr Alice Jones is a Lecturer at Goldsmiths College, University of London and Academic Tutor at the Anna Freud Centre. Her work has centred on a number of research projects investigating emotion understanding and empathy in children with conduct problems, and children with autism spectrum disorders. Alice also works alongside educational psychologists to develop and evaluate school-based intervention programmes for children with chronic behavioural difficulties.

Alice is co-author of the “Resilience” booklet with Norah Frederickson and the “Healthy Living” booklet with Adrian Furnham.

Dr Eamon McCrory

Dr Eamon McCrory is Consultant Clinical Psychologist with the NSPCC and co-director of the Developmental Risk and Resilience Unit at University College London. His research interests focus on developmental disorders including conduct disorder, developmental dyslexia, Asperger syndrome and emerging personality disorder in childhood. He is currently leading a 3-year brain imaging project to investigate emotion processing and childhood maltreatment with a particular emphasis on identifying markers of resilience. 

Eamon is co-author of the “Resilience” booklet with Seán Cameron.
